Photographic Material: Negatives

Photographic negatives are divided according to the material of their manufacture into 3 basic categories: paper, glass and plastic. Paper negatives, the earliest teqnique, are mostly part of museum collections. Glass negatives are difficult to preserve, due to the fragility of the glass. Plastic negatives, although flexible, are more easily affected by atmospheric conditions and storage materials, as well as by the type of plastic substrate (e.g. cellulose acetate, cellulose nitrate, polyester).

Conservation treatments, storage in appropriate materials and environmental conditions are proposed, depending on the type of material and the state of preservation.
